Zero Waste @ Taarana: Fostering Environmental Skills in Our Students
“We’re also teaching our students to care for the world around them.”
Taarana School has launched the ‘Zero Waste @ Taarana’ programme, an initiative designed to equip our neurodivergent students with essential skills in sustainability, conservation, and recycling while preparing them for future job opportunities. This programme is a cornerstone of our commitment to both environmental responsibility and inclusive education.
Launched in May, ‘Zero Waste @ Taarana’ goes beyond just promoting eco-friendly practices. It’s a holistic approach that integrates sustainable habits into the daily routines of our students, staff, and parents. Through this initiative, we aim to provide practical experience that could open doors to careers in environmentally-focused industries for our students.
The programme features various activities such as recycling stations, waste sorting exercises, and creative art projects made from repurposed materials. These hands-on experiences are designed to build independence, foster inclusivity, and instil a strong sense of environmental stewardship in our students.
The Principal of Taarana, Dr Sunitha Sivakumaran, expressed her enthusiasm: “At Taarana, we’re not just focused on academics; we’re also teaching our students to care for the world around them. This project is part of our broader effort to create a sustainable future, especially for our older pre-vocational students, but we’re also ensuring our younger ones learn the importance of sustainability early on.”
Sustainability and Inclusivity
The ‘Zero Waste @ Taarana’ programme is a model of inclusivity, demonstrating how tailored education can significantly impact students with diverse needs. It also highlights the potential of neurodivergent students to contribute meaningfully to society and the environment.
During the launch event, Datin Sri Umayal Eswaran, Chairperson of RYTHM Foundation, emphasised the dual focus of the initiative: “With ‘Zero Waste @ Taarana,’ we’re not only promoting environmental sustainability but also championing inclusivity. We’re working towards a society where everyone can be accepted and valued, no matter their abilities. This initiative represents our commitment to a more inclusive and sustainable future.”
The programme embodies our vision to empower students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in a world that increasingly values sustainability and inclusivity.
